Mylo (IRIS Redesign) - Aires' Internal Relocation Management System

Project Overview:
A full redesign of a 20-year-old complex system. The original system (IRIS) is a desktop-based accounting program that has been reworked and patched together over 20 years to fit the needs of our operations team members. The goal of the project is to do a full redesign of the system to modernize the look and feel, adapt it into a browser-based system, and fully rework the user experience to better fit the needs of our operations users.

Tasks:
UX Design, UI Design, User Research, Design System Creation, Accessibility

Tools:
Figma, Mural, Lucidchart, Jira, Confluence

Project Length:
3 years to date

Challenges

  • The original system is highly complex, requiring months of work to gain a grasp of the product's functionality
  • The product serves many different types of users. We needed to be sure that each of these user types was satisfied with the product
  • Limited research/synthesis timeline
  • Releasing iteratively has posed a challenge, as the new system must function alongside the old after MVP release (and all further releases until the project is entirely complete)

Process

Empathize

Mural UX Session

To start the project, we attempted to immerse ourselves in the user's world to gain an understanding of their needs, experiences, challenges, and motivations. We created a list of 'User Advisory Board' members that consisted of users from each of the eight user types, drawing at least one user of each type when bringing users in during workshops. A mix of card sorting, user interviews/workshops, contextual research, participatory design, and focus groups helped us uncover the emotional drivers and pain points that motivated our user's needs and behaviors.

After gathering information from our users, we began synthesizing the collected data to pinpoint and articulate the core user needs and problems. This process involved creating user personas, journey maps, and problem statements, which set up a solid foundation for ideating solutions that aligned with our users' goals and obstacles. This ensured that the design process stayed on track and user-centric.

Ideate

Early Iteration
Early Iteration

The ideation phase was filled with different sketches, wireframes, and diverging ideas. We explored a wide array of potential solutions to uncover any unexpected directions or novel approaches that we may not have considered if we were more rigid in our approach. We included users and stakeholders to give feedback on early concepts to help us solidify our best ideas.

Prototype & Test

Redesigned System

Our prototypes were designed in the form of interactive digital mockups via Figma. We created these prototypes to visualize how users would interact with the product, which enabled our team to test and refine the functionality, gather user feedback, and identify any issues or areas for improvement. It was a cyclical, iterative process where making quick, low-cost models allowed for rapid exploration of multiple concepts and adjustments based on user tests. Our prototyping and testing resulted in a well-informed, user-validated design that was ready to move into development.

'Final' Product

  • The MVP of this product, as well as the first significant iteration beyond MVP, have released to much praise/success within the company
  • We are actively working to measure the efficiency gained by our operations users. Our few early tests averaged a 26% reduction in time spent on the tasks measured
  • As this product is live and the project is still ongoing, we are receiving feedback and constantly working to iterate and improve it (hence 'Final')
